Entering the Lob Zone

We mostly had our normal group back to playing today. I had some pretty good play when we first started. I had a couple of really fun, good games. Then about, I don’t know, 3 or 4 games in it kind of wasn’t as beneficial. Does that mean I started losing? Maybe.

The rotation was really good, I think I actually played with everybody today. When I got into the rotation of lobbing I didn’t see as many shots as I like. I got to chase down a few but mostly got to watch my poor partner backpedal and hustle to get third shot lobs, baseline lobs, volley lobs and unexpected lobs from the kitchen. Lobbing is certainly a recipe to win (a rec game) but is much less fun to play.

I try to stay engaged when the lobbing commenced but I basically just shut down. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. I can’t help without getting in the way and I can’t prevent it from happening. Then, after 2 or 3 games like that I get to play against people who are going to do drops, drives and dinks and have to switch back to playing mode. It’s tough to do.

My serve was going pretty deep most of the time. In the games where people were lobbing, I tried to focus on the roll shot as much as possible just to be able to practice something. One guy was purposely serving to my backhand, which is always helpful. I know I should practice staying engaged and I guess maybe try to figure out ways around the lobs but individually I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do to help.

I am happy I got to hit some balls today. Any day with pickleball is better than a day without.
