Cold hands and dinking

I got my Friday play and we played for a really long time. I played with a couple of different ladies, one gal I had never played with and she was pretty good and had some different shots. I also played with one of my Tuesday night ladies I haven’t seen in a little bit, so that was nice. I got a lot of good play and actually had an all women’s game, which is really unusual.

The rotation wasn’t that great today but I have no complaints because I got really good games. I hate it when I say that because I feel so selfish. I feel like if I were the person who didn’t get the good rotation I would be ticked off but still, I was pretty happy with how play happened today.

One of the gals left about a half an hour early and that kind of threw everything off. Two of our guys subbed in the first 15 or 20 minutes with another group to help them out because they were missing a person and that didn’t help either. There wasn’t anything intentional with the rotation, it just happened.

Fortunately for me, I got good games. I had some good shots, I missed more drops than I like but mostly I had a pretty good day.

At the end we played one last game and I didn’t know we were playing the game. I thought we were just helping somebody hit a few shots with a different paddle. I actually hit an out ball that I didn’t let bounce off the return. It was crazy. Eventually we played a full game, I’m assuming that was an actual game, but I didn’t know. It was weird.

That aside it was a really good day and it’s really pretty out so I’m surprised we played inside. I don’t have anything lined up for Saturday so hopefully I can scrounge around and find a game.

For my evening play I drove all the way over to Dublin, which is like one of my least favorite drives. The courts are not in the best shape at this point. However, I had a nice group there and played 3 or 4 games.

It was freaking cold and there was wind. I am definitely not a fan of either. When it’s cold and windy you can’t exactly sit around and chat like you can when you’re in a nice cozy gymnasium on a Friday night.

It was not quite the same experience I’m used to. I got to see different people, so that was nice, and it was interesting to try to hit the ball with wind. That was definitely a unique challenge. But I also was playing with the one hand in my pocket which is not exactly the safest thing to do and certainly affects the performance of your shot.

But it was good to get out. I didn’t stay home and just eat. My hands are still frozen but I love pickleball. It will be warm enough, soon enough.

Thursday – April 6

I didn’t have any play lined up for today and a friend of mine wanted to work on dinking. I agreed to drill with her but wasn’t sure what time we were getting together and showed up a little later than when she arrived.

I felt bad because she was there to drill with someone else but asked me to come too. I felt like I crashed their workout. We were dinking for 2 hours and 15 minutes. Eventually our other friend stopped working on her serve, she was perfecting this inside out to serve and it looked really good, and came and worked with us too.

We did play 3 games and it was kind of interesting to do that with someone other than my normal drilling partner. I’m probably getting a little too used to what he does so playing with someone else was like, whoa, I didn’t see that coming or, wow I wasn’t ready for that. That was a big benefit for me when we were in game mode because I saw different shots.

She wanted to work on her forehand cross court dinks and which means I got to work on my backhand cross court dinks. I’ll never complain about that. She really was able to kind of push me in some hard angles so I had to figure out my counter.

It was a good workout, definitely worth the drive. I’m glad I got to hit some balls today. I had nothing else lined up so that worked out perfectly.
