Tuesday night is ladies night but this week, one of our ladies was out of town and the other one needed a sitter. So, rather than find 2 people in order for us to play we rescheduled for Thursday. I kept the court and went to drill, and it was a good work out.
I used a ball machine and went through 2 different sets of repetition. I worked pretty much everything – forehand, 2-hand backhand, drops, and blocks from the transition zone. I moved up to the kitchen and really tried to focus on some of my volleys, both forehand and backhand, which was really nice to be able to do because when I practice them in my basement I don’t see where they actually would land on a court. I was able to change how I hit the ball in a couple of different scenarios to see what would happen.
I was going to do another set with the machine but after going twice I thought my shoulder had enough. One of my friends was there to help me and she agreed to hit me some lobs so I could work on those. A lot of the lobs were higher than I typically see but I had plenty of time to get under them which was helpful for my footwork. I wasn’t trying to chase down lobs, I was trying to work on overheads off a lob.
I’m not spotting the ball with my non-paddle hand in a consistent manner, which leads to inconsistent shots. I noticed a huge difference if I spotted the ball, regardless of which hand I used for the overhead. I did try a couple of overhead backhands, which was hilarious, but I think if I use proper mechanics with either hand I’ll be fine. For the last 10 minutes or so we did some dinking and that was good because I got to practice ATPs and practice some put-aways.
I think tonight’s workout was super beneficial. I’m tired and my shoulder hurts so I know it was a good workout.
